Step-by-Step Walkthrough

1. Build a canonical clause library

Consolidate the three divergent clause collections into a single versioned library with standardized variable placeholders.

Use openclaw to create a clause library with 35 standard clauses: confidentiality, indemnification, limitation of liability, payment terms, termination, intellectual property assignment, non-solicitation, governing law, dispute resolution, and force majeure. Each clause should use Openclaw markup with variables like [[Party A Name]], [[Effective Date]], [[Payment Amount]], and [[Governing State]]. Store in /clauses/ with one file per clause.

2. Create contract templates from clause compositions

Assemble clauses into complete contract templates for the firm's three most common contract types.

Use picoclaw to compose three contract templates from the clause library: a Master Services Agreement (18 clauses), a Statement of Work (12 clauses), and a Consulting Agreement (15 clauses). Each template should define which clauses to include, their order, and any template-level variables. Include conditional sections: the MSA includes an IP assignment clause only when [[Work Product Ownership]] is set to "client". Save templates to /templates/.

3. Generate a batch of contracts with variable substitution

Produce actual contracts from a CSV of client data, substituting all variables and rendering to formatted output.

Use picoclaw to generate contracts for 8 new clients from /data/new_clients.csv. For each row, substitute the variables (client name, address, effective date, payment terms, governing state, project scope) into the appropriate template type. Render each contract to Markdown and PDF. Validate that no unsubstituted [[variables]] remain in the output. Save to /output/{client_name}/.

After running the generation, picoclaw produces a summary showing every contract and any variable issues:

Each output directory contains the rendered contract in both formats, along with a metadata file that records which clause versions were used, making it easy to audit contracts months later.

4. Add version tracking and diff capability

Implement a change tracking system so the firm can see exactly what changed between contract versions.

Set up version tracking for the clause library using openclaw. When a clause is updated, generate a diff showing exactly what changed. Maintain a changelog at /clauses/CHANGELOG.md. When generating a contract, embed the clause version numbers in a metadata footer so the firm can trace which version of each clause was used in any given contract.

The consulting firm migrated their three divergent clause libraries into one canonical collection of 35 clauses. The paralegal who used to spend 2-3 hours assembling each contract now runs a single generation command with client data from their CRM export.
