The Problem

Alex leads frontend at a 20-person company building a marketplace that accepts crypto payments. MetaMask integration tutorials are outdated (ethers v5, not v6). Handling wallet connection, disconnection, chain switching, and transaction signing requires 500+ lines of error-prone code. Users on different chains (Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum) need automatic chain switching. Token balances need real-time updates. NFT ownership verification for gated content has no reusable pattern. They need a clean wallet integration: connect/disconnect, sign transactions, track balances, display NFTs, and support multiple chains.

Step 1: Build the Wallet Integration

typescript
import { Redis } from "ioredis";
const redis = new Redis(process.env.REDIS_URL!);

interface WalletState {
  connected: boolean;
  address: string | null;
  chainId: number | null;
  chainName: string | null;
  balance: string;
  tokens: TokenBalance[];
  nfts: NFTItem[];
}

interface TokenBalance { symbol: string; name: string; balance: string; decimals: number; contractAddress: string; usdValue: number; }
interface NFTItem { tokenId: string; name: string; image: string; collection: string; contractAddress: string; }
interface TransactionRequest { to: string; value: string; data?: string; chainId: number; }
interface TransactionResult { hash: string; status: "pending" | "confirmed" | "failed"; blockNumber?: number; gasUsed?: string; }

const CHAINS: Record<number, { name: string; rpcUrl: string; explorer: string; nativeCurrency: { name: string; symbol: string; decimals: number } }> = {
  1: { name: "Ethereum", rpcUrl: "https://eth.llamarpc.com", explorer: "https://etherscan.io", nativeCurrency: { name: "Ether", symbol: "ETH", decimals: 18 } },

Results

  • 5 chains supported — Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism; same API; chain switching handled; no per-chain code in frontend
  • SIWE authentication — "Sign in with Ethereum" replaces passwords for Web3 users; server verifies signature; session stored in Redis
  • NFT-gated content — verify ownership of specific NFT collection; gate premium features; no third-party service needed
  • Real-time balances — native + ERC-20 token balances cached for 30s; dashboard shows portfolio across chains
  • Transaction tracking — submit tx hash → poll for confirmation; status shown to user; no manual block explorer checking
