Build a Tenant Isolation Testing Framework

Build a tenant isolation testing framework with cross-tenant data leak detection, permission boundary verification, resource quota enforcement, and automated security scanning for multi-tenant SaaS.

The Problem

Oliver leads security at a 25-person multi-tenant SaaS. During a penetration test, they discovered that changing the tenant ID in an API request returned another customer's data — a critical data leak. This happened because one endpoint forgot to add the tenant filter to its database query. With 150 API endpoints, manually checking each one is impractical. They also found that a noisy tenant could exhaust shared database connections, affecting all tenants. They need automated isolation testing: verify every endpoint respects tenant boundaries, test resource quotas, scan for missing tenant filters, and run these checks in CI before every deploy.

Step 1: Build the Isolation Testing Framework

typescript
// src/testing/isolation.ts — Tenant isolation verification with automated scanning
import { pool } from "../db";
import { Redis } from "ioredis";
import { randomBytes } from "node:crypto";

const redis = new Redis(process.env.REDIS_URL!);

interface IsolationTest {
  id: string;
  name: string;
  type: "data_leak" | "permission" | "quota" | "resource";
  endpoint: string;
  method: string;
  status: "pass" | "fail" | "error";
  details: string;
  duration: number;
}

interface TestSuite {
  id: string;
  totalTests: number;
  passed: number;
  failed: number;
  errors: number;
  tests: IsolationTest[];
  startedAt: string;
  completedAt: string;
}

interface Endpoint {
  method: string;
  path: string;
  requiresAuth: boolean;
  tenantScoped: boolean;
}

// Run complete isolation test suite
export async function runIsolationSuite(
  baseUrl: string,
  endpoints: Endpoint[]
): Promise<TestSuite> {
  const suiteId = `suite-${randomBytes(6).toString("hex")}`;
  const tests: IsolationTest[] = [];
  const startedAt = new Date().toISOString();

  // Create two test tenants
  const tenantA = await createTestTenant("tenant-a");
  const tenantB = await createTestTenant("tenant-b");

  // Seed data for both tenants
  await seedTestData(tenantA.id, tenantA.token);
  await seedTestData(tenantB.id, tenantB.token);

  for (const endpoint of endpoints) {
    if (!endpoint.tenantScoped) continue;

    // Test 1: Cross-tenant data leak
    tests.push(await testDataLeak(baseUrl, endpoint, tenantA, tenantB));

    // Test 2: Tenant B can't access Tenant A's resources
    tests.push(await testPermissionBoundary(baseUrl, endpoint, tenantA, tenantB));

    // Test 3: Missing tenant filter detection
    tests.push(await testMissingTenantFilter(baseUrl, endpoint, tenantA));
  }

  // Test 4: Resource quota isolation
  tests.push(await testResourceQuota(baseUrl, tenantA, tenantB));

  // Test 5: Connection pool isolation
  tests.push(await testConnectionIsolation(tenantA, tenantB));

Results

  • Data leak caught before production — test found 3 endpoints missing tenant_id filter; fixed in code review; zero customer data exposed
  • 150 endpoints scanned automatically — full isolation suite runs in CI; 5 minutes per deploy; no manual penetration testing for tenant boundaries
  • Permission boundary verified — Tenant B's token correctly returns 403 for Tenant A resources across all endpoints; RBAC works
  • Noisy neighbor protection — resource quota test confirms Tenant A's burst doesn't degrade Tenant B's latency; per-tenant rate limiting works
  • Regression prevention — new endpoints automatically included in isolation tests; developer adds endpoint → CI catches missing tenant filter before merge
