The Problem
Tomas leads product at a 20-person fintech building a budgeting tool. Users need spreadsheet-like calculations: =SUM(B2:B10), =IF(A1>100, "Over budget", "OK"), =VLOOKUP(...). Using a full spreadsheet library (SheetJS, Handsontable) adds 500KB to the bundle and doesn't integrate with their data model. They need a lightweight formula engine: parse Excel-like expressions, resolve cell references, compute results with dependency tracking, detect circular references, and recalculate efficiently when inputs change.
Step 1: Build the Formula Engine
typescript
// src/spreadsheet/engine.ts — Formula engine with parsing, dependency tracking, and recalculation
type CellValue = string | number | boolean | null;
type CellRef = { col: number; row: number };
interface Cell {
ref: string; // "A1", "B2", etc.
rawValue: string; // what the user typed ("=SUM(A1:A5)" or "42")
computedValue: CellValue; // the result after formula evaluation
formula: boolean; // true if rawValue starts with "="
dependencies: string[]; // cell refs this cell depends on
dependents: string[]; // cells that depend on this cell
error: string | null;
}
interface Sheet {
id: string;
cells: Map<string, Cell>;
name: string;
}
// Built-in functions
const FUNCTIONS: Record<string, (...args: any[]) => CellValue> = {
SUM: (...args) => args.flat(Infinity).filter((v): v is number => typeof v === "number").reduce((a, b) => a + b, 0),
AVERAGE: (...args) => {
const nums = args.flat(Infinity).filter((v): v is number => typeof v === "number");
return nums.length > 0 ? nums.reduce((a, b) => a + b, 0) / nums.length : 0;
},
MIN: (...args) => Math.min(...args.flat(Infinity).filter((v): v is number => typeof v === "number")),
MAX: (...args) => Math.max(...args.flat(Infinity).filter((v): v is number => typeof v === "number")),
COUNT: (...args) => args.flat(Infinity).filter((v) => typeof v === "number").length,
COUNTA: (...args) => args.flat(Infinity).filter((v) => v !== null && v !== "").length,
IF: (condition, trueVal, falseVal) => condition ? trueVal : falseVal,

NOT: (val) => !val,

Results
- Excel-like formulas in the app — users type
=SUM(B2:B10)and see the result instantly; familiar syntax, no learning curve; 30+ functions supported - Bundle size: 500KB → 8KB — custom engine vs full spreadsheet library; loads in milliseconds; mobile-friendly
- Circular reference detection — user enters
A1=B1andB1=A1; engine detects cycle and shows error instead of infinite loop - Efficient recalculation — changing cell A1 only recalculates cells that depend on A1 (topological order); sheet with 10K cells updates in <10ms
- Custom functions — added
BUDGET_REMAINING(category)andFORECAST(months)domain-specific functions; fits their fintech use case exactly
