The Problem

Dave leads engineering at a 20-person edtech with 5,000 course videos. Users upload MOV files (2GB each) that only play on Safari. Mobile users on slow connections buffer endlessly because there's one quality level. Thumbnails are extracted manually in Photoshop. Processing a single video takes an engineer 30 minutes of ffmpeg commands. They need automated transcoding: accept any input format, generate multiple quality levels (adaptive bitrate), extract thumbnails, track progress, and notify when done.

Step 1: Build the Transcoding Pipeline

typescript
import { pool } from "../db";
import { Redis } from "ioredis";
import { randomBytes } from "node:crypto";
import { execSync, exec } from "node:child_process";
const redis = new Redis(process.env.REDIS_URL!);

interface TranscodeJob {
  id: string;
  inputPath: string;
  outputPaths: Record<string, string>;
  status: "queued" | "processing" | "completed" | "failed";
  progress: number;
  profiles: TranscodeProfile[];
  thumbnails: string[];
  metadata: { duration: number; width: number; height: number; codec: string; size: number };
  webhookUrl: string | null;
  createdAt: string;
}

interface TranscodeProfile {
  name: string;
  width: number;
  height: number;
  bitrate: string;
  codec: string;
  format: string;
}

const PROFILES: TranscodeProfile[] = [
  { name: "1080p", width: 1920, height: 1080, bitrate: "5000k", codec: "libx264", format: "mp4" },
  { name: "720p", width: 1280, height: 720, bitrate: "2500k", codec: "libx264", format: "mp4" },

    }
  }
}

export async function getProgress(jobId: string): Promise<number> {
  return parseInt(await redis.get(`transcode:progress:${jobId}`) || "0");
}

Results

  • 30 min manual → 0 min engineer time — upload triggers automatic transcoding; 4 quality levels + thumbnails generated; webhook notifies when done
  • Adaptive bitrate streaming — 1080p on fiber, 360p on 3G; video never buffers; mobile completion rates up 40%
  • Any format accepted — MOV, AVI, MKV, WebM all transcoded to MP4+AAC; plays on every browser and device; no more Safari-only videos
  • Progress tracking — student sees "Processing: 67%" while video encodes; no black box; estimated time shown
  • Auto-thumbnails — 4 thumbnails at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% of video; course editor picks best one; no Photoshop needed
