The Problem

Viktor leads platform at a 25-person company running 30 services on Kubernetes. Each new service requires: Deployment, Service, Ingress, ConfigMap, HPA, PDB, NetworkPolicy — 7 YAML files with ~200 lines. Developers copy-paste from existing services and forget to update resource limits. Health checks are misconfigured on 40% of services. Scaling policies are inconsistent. They need a Kubernetes operator: define a simple CRD (kind: WebApp), and the operator creates all required resources with sensible defaults, monitors health, and manages the full lifecycle.

Step 1: Build the Operator

typescript
import { Redis } from "ioredis";
const redis = new Redis(process.env.REDIS_URL!);

  name: string;
  image: string;
  replicas: number;
  port: number;
  env: Record<string, string>;
  resources: { cpu: string; memory: string };
  ingress?: { host: string; tls: boolean };
  scaling?: { minReplicas: number; maxReplicas: number; targetCPU: number };
  healthCheck?: { path: string; initialDelay: number; period: number };
  database?: { enabled: boolean; size: string };
}

interface WebAppStatus {
  phase: "Pending" | "Running" | "Degraded" | "Failed";
  replicas: { desired: number; ready: number; available: number };
  conditions: Array<{ type: string; status: string; message: string; lastTransition: string }>;
  url: string | null;
  lastReconciled: string;
}

// Generate all Kubernetes resources from a WebApp spec
export function generateResources(spec: WebAppSpec): Array<{ kind: string; metadata: any; spec: any }> {
  const resources: any[] = [];
  const labels = { app: spec.name, "managed-by": "webapp-operator" };

Results

  • 200 lines YAML → 15 lines CRDkind: WebApp with name, image, replicas, port; operator generates all 7 resources with best practices baked in
  • Health checks on 100% of services — operator adds liveness + readiness probes by default; no more misconfigured health checks
  • Consistent resource limits — requests and limits set from spec; no more copy-paste with wrong values; every service properly bounded
  • Auto-scaling built inscaling.targetCPU: 70 → HPA created; no separate HPA YAML; scales from 2 to 10 pods automatically
  • Network isolation — NetworkPolicy created per service; only ingress on service port allowed; zero-trust by default; security team happy
