The Problem
Noor leads engineering at a 20-person customer support company. Customers send emails to support@company.com — these need to be parsed, categorized, routed to the right team, and tracked as tickets. Currently, agents manually read emails and create tickets. Attachments (screenshots, logs) get lost. Reply threading breaks when customers change the subject line. Spam wastes agent time. Auto-responses ("we received your email") require a separate system. They need automated email processing: parse inbound emails via webhook, extract metadata, handle attachments, detect threads, filter spam, route by rules, and trigger automations.
Step 1: Build the Email Processor
// src/email/inbound.ts — Inbound email processing with parsing, routing, and automation
import { pool } from "../db";
import { Redis } from "ioredis";
import { randomBytes, createHash } from "node:crypto";

Results
- Manual ticket creation eliminated — emails auto-parsed into tickets with metadata, attachments, and thread linking; agents focus on responding, not data entry
- Thread detection works — reply to a 3-week-old email correctly added to original ticket; Message-ID chain + subject matching; no duplicate tickets
- Attachments preserved — screenshots and log files attached to tickets; inline images rendered; agents see full context without asking customer to resend
- Routing saves 30 min/day — "billing" in subject → assigned to finance team automatically; "urgent" → priority set to high; 80% of tickets routed correctly without human triage
- Spam filtered — SpamAssassin score > 5 auto-filtered; agents never see spam; false positive rate < 0.1% with configurable threshold
