The Problem

Anna leads product at a 20-person marketing tech company. Customers need to create social media graphics, email banners, and landing page mockups. They use Canva ($13/user/month for 200 users = $31K/year). Designers want more control; non-designers want simplicity. They need an in-app editor: drag-and-drop elements, text with fonts, images, shapes, layers, snap-to-grid alignment, undo/redo, templates, and export to PNG/SVG — all in the browser, no external dependency.

Step 1: Build the Canvas Engine

typescript
interface CanvasElement {
  id: string;
  type: "text" | "image" | "shape" | "group";
  x: number; y: number;
  width: number; height: number;
  rotation: number;
  opacity: number;
  zIndex: number;
  locked: boolean;
  properties: Record<string, any>;
}

interface CanvasState {
  id: string;
  width: number; height: number;
  backgroundColor: string;
  elements: CanvasElement[];
  selectedIds: string[];
  undoStack: CanvasAction[];
  redoStack: CanvasAction[];
}

interface CanvasAction {
  type: string;
  elementId?: string;
  previousState: any;
  newState: any;
  timestamp: number;
}

// Initialize canvas
export function createCanvas(width: number, height: number): CanvasState {
  return { id: `canvas-${Date.now().toString(36)}`, width, height, backgroundColor: "#FFFFFF", elements: [], selectedIds: [], undoStack: [], redoStack: [] };
}

// Add element
export function addElement(state: CanvasState, element: Omit<CanvasElement, "id" | "zIndex">): CanvasState {
  const id = `el-${Date.now().toString(36)}`;
  const zIndex = state.elements.length;
  const newElement: CanvasElement = { ...element, id, zIndex };

  const action: CanvasAction = { type: "add", elementId: id, previousState: null, newState: newElement, timestamp: Date.now() };
